Renault Megane catalytic converter scrap price and its complicated structure

Renault always tried to be one of the best when it comes to keeping the planet safe and clean. However, sometimes it is easier said than done. The catalytic converter and Renault Megane catalyst in specific, serve as a filter inside the vehicle’s exhaust system.

The catalytic converter of Renault Megane

The complicated structure of the catalytic converter allows it to purify exhausts and harmful gases that come out of the car. Those gases can be extremely dangerous to the environment and people. But is everything really that complicated?

The chemical process inside of the Renault Megane catalyst

When gasoline burns, the engine produces toxic substances such as carbon monoxide or carbon monoxide (CO), a colorless, odorless, poisonous substance that is deadly in large quantities. They are able to penetrate the skin and mucous membranes into the human body, accumulating, causing allergies and other diseases. Nitrogen oxides are toxic poisonous substances with an asphyxiant and irritating effect, a component of acid rain. Just from this information, it is safe to say that catalytic converter importance is beyond any doubt. The Renault Megane catalytic converter oxidizes these substances and reduces them to harmless compounds. Unburned fuel residues are burned out with the participation of oxygen, decompose and form harmless compounds:

  • hydrocarbon compounds are destroyed and oxidized to carbon dioxide and water

  • nitrogen and carbon oxides are converted into harmless nitrogen, the main component of the atmosphere, and carbon dioxide exhaled by animals and humans

  • carbon monoxide, reacting with oxygen under the influence of temperature and catalytic substances, is converted into carbon dioxide;

  • reacting with the liberated hydrogen, nitrogen oxides form nitrogen and water.

The passage of reactions at the desired rate and under the available conditions is provided by catalytic substances - platinum, rhodium, and palladium. The use of expensive metals leads to a rise in the price of the catalyst, the price of which can be hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Used Renault Megane catalytic converter cost

Driving with a faulty catalytic converter is not very enjoyable because of the difficulty in starting the engine and the reduced power output. The catalyst is worth it, but it does not cope with cleaning, the exhaust gases become more toxic. It is difficult for gases to escape to the outside, some of them enter the interior. Complete removal of the catalyst leads to a violation of environmental standards. The best solution is to buy a used Renault Megane catalyst (this way one may save some money) or sell it for recycling.
